Family Vacation ~ Day 3

Sunday, March 15, 2009, we headed into San Antonio to watch he St. Patricks Parade on the river. They even died the river green during the parade! There were bag pipe players and little girls that were doing Irish Dances. The girls picked up on that and were doing a little of their own little Irish jigs. It was pretty funny. For Lunch Les' cousin, Jay, told us about The Buckhorn Saloon. It is every hunters dream! There were mounts of every kind of animal you could even think of...was pretty easy to play I-spy while we waited for our sandwhiches. It was a really neat place...the oldest saloon left standing! It had the tin ceiling and you could just imagine what it looked like during the pioneer days long ago.

After lunch we headed back down the Riverwalk, which is just beautiful. The river is lined with shops and restaurants with tables set up along the river to eat outside. They also have this little boats that serve as taxi's and let you off where ever you want. They also had boats that gave you a tour through the river and tell you about the history of the area. We took the tour on the boat and if you really want to know every detail about just ask Megan...she repeated back to grandma & grandpa Graber almost word for word what the tour guide told us! I couldn't believe it...she really dislikes reading but you tell her a story she won't forget one word of it!

Then after our trip down the river we walked up to the Alamo! This was another beautiful spot in Texas. The city of San Antonio has grown up all around the Alamo so it seems a little hard to believe the entire area was a battelfield. We had a chance to listen to a historian tell of the battle at the Alamo, once again our children sat still and listened intently and enjoyed learning about the Alamo as well as getting to see the uniforms of the soldiers and the weapons they used in that time period. I learned more about the Alamo from that Historian than any amount sitting in a classroom history class! I realized Santa Ana was like the Sadaam Huessin of that era.. and "Remember the Alamo" would be like us saying "Remember our 9/11". The Alamo Battle was actually one of the first battles for Texas to get it's independance from Mexico and the men at the Alamo died protecting Texas Independance...but the next battle they came back and kicked tail shouting "remember the Alamo!" and captured Santa Ana who was trying to disguise himself as one of the Texan soldiers. Way to go Texas! So now you have had a little history lesson from me.
We stayed there until they closed and then headed back to our Tree Top Villa...or as Griffin calls it our Tree House. It was a cabin like villa built on stilts in the side of a rocky hill. It was beautiful, lots of hills with trees and rocky walls where the roads had been cut through right along the Guadalupe River. Which is known for it's "white water" type activities. The river was really low because of their drought so there was not alot of activity on the river but we saw several men fly fishing in the river.
The place was nice and also had a putt putt course on the grounds as well so after walking down to the river we played a round of putt putt and watched the sunset, it was beautiful, then we headed back in to get ready for bed to start our day 4 of vacation.....stay tuned......
